Vivian Lewis History Walk, Adelaide, Sunday  8th June 2008

June is not the best month for veteran motoring in South Australia, so instead of the usual four-wheel ramble about twenty members braved a rather bleak Adelaide morning for a   Vivian Lewis History Walk.

Vivian Lewis "walkers"

Vivian Lewis began his bicycle business in Gawler Place (then called Freeman St) in 1893, but as the business expanded to become one of Adelaide's leading motoring houses it always stayed close to its roots. The meander took us to the sites of all the "veteran" Adelaide premises, in Gawler Place, McHenry Street, Victoria Square, Molton Street and Gawler Place South. Unfortunately none of the buildings are still standing, but  with the help of period photographs and maps we managed to channel some of the Vivian Lewis spirit and get an idea of an aspect of South Australia's motoring heritage. The photograph shows the group moving down what was Molton Street, but is now a private laneway, to the site of the 1905-1910 Motor House and Factory.

If you missed the walk, or were there but want to relive the experience, you can take a "cyber version" of the tour. Here is a Google Map (one for Internet Explorer users, one for Firefox users) showing the locations visited and a couple that weren't. If you "click" a blue location marker, a box will pop up with the name the site; click on the location name and you will be taken to the appropriate location page on the Lewis Project web site.
