years of the Dutton Crossing, Sunday 29th June 2008 One hundred years ago H.H. Dutton and his mechanic Murray Aunger set of to cross the Australian continent from south to north. The 1908 25 h.p. Talbot used in the crossing is no stranger to the road to Darwin, having repeated the trip in 1959 and 1988. To celebrate the centenary of the first crossing, the old girl is on the way again, but this time on the back of a trailer.
To wish her bon voyage, members gathered at the Torrens Parade Ground on a damp-ish but not unpleasant mid-winter Sunday morning, following obligatory breakfast in North Adelaide. Mid-winter may not seem the ideal time to head off across country, but the plan was to avoid the wet season in the tropical North,
The display set up in the History Trust of South Australia building was very impressive, and it was marvellous to inspect the Talbot at close quarters. If you missed it this time, the car will be back on display at the National motor Museum at Birdwood following the trip.
Thankfully the weather held off so the cars outside stayed dry and homeward journeys were accomplished on dry roads.
Thanks to the staff of the National Motor Museum who made the visit possible. More information about the 2008 trip can be found at their web site Off the beaten track: a journey across a nation. |
